Both are on the Red Sea. Hamata is further south and more remote: the wind is stronger in winter, it is about five degrees warmer than Hurghada, and the lagoon is huge. El Gouna is a livelier resort.

March to May is the best period according to High Tech Travel. The wind usually blows between 12 and 22 knots, and is there more than 80% of the time from September to May.

Do I need to know how to kitesurf?

No. You can stand in the lagoon, the bottom is sand, and the kite centre welcomes beginners every day.

Can I bring my own gear?

Yes. A 32 kg kitebag costs 110 euros return, and only six can travel on the flight. The kite centre pass, required with your own gear, costs 84 euros for the week.

Hamata kitesurf trip, Egypt, March 2027

Hamata lies in the south of Egypt, about a hundred kilometres past Marsa Alam, in a nature park far from the big resorts. The Kite Village sits on Camel Beach, facing one of the largest lagoons in the country: 2 km² of sand with no coral, knee-deep water, and mangroves on the upwind side. Our partner High Tech Travel counts it among the best places in the world to learn.

The wind comes in from the open sea. In the morning it runs along the coast until around 11, then turns side-onshore and builds until early afternoon, sometimes until sunset. A large sandbank almost closes the lagoon: the water stays flat, and the wind always brings you back to shore. Beginners learn in front of the beach, more advanced riders head a little further out to the deep water to foil.

The group stays at Hamata Kite Village, 35 bungalows 50 metres from the water, two hours by road from Marsa Alam airport. Departure on Sunday 14 March 2027 on a direct flight from Brussels, back on the 21st. Departing from Düsseldorf is also possible, with a 20 kg suitcase included.
